Sustainability

Designed to last rather than to be replaced

The most sustainable product is one that never needs to be thrown away. Our entire design philosophy begins from this premise — and every material, finish, and engineering decision follows from it.

What we actually do

Design lifespan

25 years minimum

Every system we produce is engineered and tested for a minimum 25-year functional lifespan under normal domestic use conditions. Our drawer mechanisms carry a 100,000-cycle rating — approximately 27 years at typical daily frequency.

This is not a warranty claim — it is an engineering target. A kitchen organisation system that lasts 25 years is one that will not be in landfill in 2036 when the kitchen is next renovated.

Materials

Recycled & certified

The structural steel in our products contains a minimum 60% recycled content, sourced from certified European mills with documented chain-of-custody. All wood components use FSC-certified timber from German and Austrian suppliers.

Bamboo components — used for drawer divider systems — are sourced from suppliers with 4-year managed harvest cycles. We do not use tropical hardwoods in any product.

Surface treatments

Zero VOC finishes

All powder-coating is carried out at our Munich facility using electrostatic application — a process that produces zero volatile organic compound emissions and generates less than 2% coating waste (versus 25-40% for spray application).

Water-based lacquers are used on all wood and interior bin surfaces. All surface treatments are food-safe certified for kitchen environments.

Energy

72% renewable

Our Munich production facility operates on 72% renewable energy — a combination of rooftop solar and grid-supplied hydro and wind power under certified green tariffs. We are committed to reaching 100% by 2028.

Waste heat from the powder-coating process is recovered and used to heat the production floor during winter months, reducing gas consumption by approximately 35%.

Certification

B Corp since 2019

Hailo Colours has held B Corp certification since 2019. The certification is renewed every three years and covers governance, workers, community, environment, and customers.

Our current B Impact score is 94.2 — significantly above the 80-point certification threshold. Full assessment reports are available on request.
